EtA: entire thread so far is about Castle, not the return of the reprint. I am hereby put in my place. *grin*

Am very very very pleased to say that STAYING DEAD is once again available in mass market (and the author stops pulling her hair out and muttering dire things about the warehouse software glitch)

http://www.eharlequin.com/storeitem.html?iid=11931&cid=

(hopefully soon B&N and Amazon will get the memo, too. and yeah, Powells, I'm looking at you.....)

Go, buy a copy! Buy a copy for yourself, for your friend, for the parent who wonders why you read "that crap' (hi dad. nope, statute of limitations still hasn't run out on that comment).

And, to celebrate this return to availability, there's a slight change to the on-going contest: the winner will be able to choose as their prize a copy of either Staying Dead, Curse the Dark or Bring it On in mass market!
------------------------------

Meanwhile, who here fell off the sofa when the cop on "Castle" last night mentioned sleestacks? *raises hand* And then showing us the evidence board (which I had just been writing about in Pack of Lies), and repeating the motif again in Castle's storyboard, and having the two leads consciously stop and acknowledge the connection in their professional lives...and then moving on, without missing a beat -- and oh, the moment when the two of them are trying to figure out what's next in the why-he-dunnit theory, and both hitting the "oh f**k I'm screwed' moment where they couldn't figure out the next plot twist...

I really do fangirl this show, hard. Acting and writing and directing, all. Thank god it's not on Fox, or they would have canceled it already.

Any other Castle fans out there? And if you're not watching, why not?

Man, you guys made it tough -- twenty-four entries, and a lot of disagreement among the judges. In fact, one entry got an equal number of 'best' and 'worst' votes!

the details of the judging )

But, in the end, there can be only one... in each category, anyway.

Best:

The leaves of the book
fall open into my hand
but it is not there.

Worst:

can has book to eat?
Retrievers are so tasty
want to nomnom Wren

Special split-vote snarf award:

cheap, tawdry begging
seem the order of the day
please give me your book

Winners, step forward and claim your copy of STAYING DEAD! [mailing addresses should be sent to wrensergei(at)lycos(dot)com.]

And everyone who entered gets a signed bookplate, if they so desire...

Life's a little crazy today, so the new contest will be posted instead on Friday, giving everyone the weekend to work on it...

Although there is violence and certainly some emotional and physical darkness in the Retriever series, I never think of it as being horror, or even dark fantasy, particularly. I tend to describe it as "contemporary caper novels with magic" and if pushed will describe the magic as "scientific energies harnessed by unknown means." And yet, horror readers seem to want to claim it, too.

Hey, I'm happy to hang out with everyone. Pass the bottle and turn up the tunes, dude.

So, Staying Dead is #7 on the Fictionwise fantasy list. It's a small list in a small pond, but it pleases me nonetheless. The reader review -- only one, but they liked it, they really liked it! -- pleases me even more.

And, for those of you craving that next Wren Valere fix, the short story "Palimpsest" (from Powers of Detection) is also up on Fictionwise, and only 64 cents! Go, read. Hey, Publishers Weekly liked it, so will you!

In fact, read 'em all, they're short. I'll write more. ;-)

According to the on-line retailers, it's shipping now. If you're one of the folk who waited, and then got caught when the trade edition sold out, now's your chance! And only $6.99! And if you already have a copy, now you can get another copy to loan to people, while keeping your trade edition safe and sound!

And it makes a great present! Easy to wrap!

*waits*

Why are you still here? Go, buy! Early and often!

e-finally!

Update from Madame Editrix: Staying Dead will be an e-book in June.

Download early, download often...

I note that BN.com no longer has the trade edition for sale, and Amazon.com is warning that it's becoming "hard to find" and is therefore no longer discounted.

Fear not, it's not going OOP...technically. But Luna's drying up the available trade stock in order to make way for the mass market edition coming in June 2006 (just three more months!).

So if you're the type who wants to keep all issues in the same format, order now! And if you've been waiting for the less expensive edition (waves to several folk Down Under), or as a obsessive completeist want to see what corrections were made in the reprint (there's at least two), pre-order now!

here endeth the PSA.

Personally? No author likes to see a book become unavailable. Even knowing that another format's out there (be it mass, or digital or audio or Some Technology Yet to Be Invented) doesn't take away from the sting. My first-born, to all intents and purposes, has ended its run. *sob*

It sucks. You move on. You pray for a movie tie-in to come down the pike some day.... (you listening, Hollywood?). You hope that eventually there will be enough interest in your work that it gets reprinted back in trade (or hardcover!), with someone semi-famous writing a hoity-pretentious foreword saying nice things about you, and that they don't wait until you're dead to do it. But it all still sucks.

Still. Was a nice run. *pats trade edition* Nice job, kid.

It appears that Amazon.com, at least, is offering the mass market edition of STAYING DEAD on their site. It won't be available until June, but you're now able to pre-order it, should you (or a loved one, or a casual acquaintence or a random stranger on the street) wish to do so...

(as The Great Joss says -- "what is this 'shame' you speak of?")

That is all. Carry on.

(more news, and reports of a web site overhaul, to come within days. Okay, more likely a week or so...)

One thing I forgot to mention in my Worldcon roundup was being approached by a friend from the MA area who handed me the July 30th 'SIDEKICK' inset from the Boston Globe, pointing me to p .8, the "You're Up" section.

And there, in the reader's comments about what they're taking poolside, I found one Kimberly Shaw from Boxford, who in addition to the new Harry Potter and JD Robb's ORIGIN IN DEATH, mentioned CURSE THE DARK and STAYING DEAD as "really good reads."

Wheeeeee!
