Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka! May it be filled with much happy squee.
-----------------

Managed to get 2,000 new words yesterday, working around paperwork and Other Life Events. Now all I have to do is keep that pace for another month, and it's smooth sailing. Um, yeah. Well, it's a goal. It's good to have goals, right? I also managed to write an entire scenelet that may not actually fit in the book, but was good to put down on the page -- it filled out a lot of the character interactions, and finally let me use some venom I've been saving for a special occasion. Never irritate a writer. You'll end up in a book, sooner rather than later, and it won't be pretty.
----------------------------------

I haven't been posting much about things financial or political because at this point you're either paying attention or your head's so firmly in the sand you've struck oil. But while we're all peeking carefully with one eye at the financial news, and wincing, there's other stuff going on in DC, too. From the New York Times this morning:

A few weeks before he left office, President George W. Bush told federal officials that, in effect, they did not have to bother getting the advice of wildlife experts before taking actions that might harm plants or animals protected by the Endangered Species Act.

On Tuesday, President Obama said that, in effect, they did.

Saving the future, one presidential edict at a time. (okay, it's not a total reversal. It's moving in the right direction, for a change. Save the polar bear. Save the world. [Not just the humans who live on it])
-----------------------

And now I must get to that to-do list. Y'all have a good day, y'hear?
lauraanne_gilman: (meerkat and diet coke)
The apartment smells like chili* (gee, I wonder why) the cats are wondering why mom's not at her desk, and I have been informed that I should be rooting for Pittsburgh, as Pitt is still #1 Nephew's front-runner school choice.

I'd rather have had the Giants playing today, natch, but it will be fun to just kick back with friends and watch the game without the accompanying agita. And either way, there will be Stadium Cake! :-) And don't forget the halftime show! *is Bruce-cheerful*

For those about to couch, we raise our beer and chips in salute. The rest of the world, we'll see you on Monday morning.

(and happiest of happies to [livejournal.com profile] nycdeb!)

*traditional meat-only, Mexican-influenced, and ranging from "mmm, toasty" to "OMG sour cream now!" hot, depending on how my powder blend came out that year....

1. The Good: Happy (almost belated) birthday, [livejournal.com profile] deire! Hope it was a dramallama-free day...

2. The Bad: Watching the news, we're left still wondering at who might actually be behind the terrorist attacks, and why they chose the targets they did. My mother (who knows a bit about the region, professionally) and I have both been thinking 'something about all this doesn't quite make sense...' I mean, as much as terrorism ever makes sense-as-sane-people-see-it. The actions and the politics and the probable/intended results aren't quite aligning yet. *sighs* I don't think humanity is ever going to get its collective shit together, no. We're still territorial apes, no matter if we're trampling each other for the sake of saving $ in our holiday shopping or shooting each other in cold blood over geo-political religious differences. *despairs*

3. The comic relief: this? Cracked me up.

http://www.henryhemp.com/node/3010

"OTTAWA — Researchers say they have located the world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China...The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly "cultivated for psychoactive purposes," rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany....The 18 researchers, most of them based in China, subjected the cannabis to a battery of tests, including carbon dating and genetic analysis. Scientists also tried to germinate 100 of the seeds found in the cache, without success."

Humanity can be amusing and playful apes, too. Pity we don't do more of that.

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] neadods!
lauraanne_gilman: (bye-bye)
[livejournal.com profile] debg arrived at midnight on Tuesday. We talked until 2 am, staggered into consciousness mid-morning Wednesday, and headed down to Manhattan where we...

Hit the thrift stores (and scored). Ate burgers at my favorite NYC burger place. Went downtown and wandered in and out of whatever stores caught our fancy. Got Deb her preferred coffee. Stopped for a glass (or two) at a wine bar I've been meaning to check out (very nice, will be back there). Were attacked by a vintage clothing store where I struggled valiantly with the question of To Buy or Not To Buy a 1920's black velvet frock coat that looked amazing on me but would have needed additional repairs before I could wear it. Decided not, regretfully. Went and spent some of that money instead at the ever-dangerous Shoegasm (soft black leather lace-up half-boots ith fabulous heels, score!). Came home and and drank prosecco, packed and crashed. This morning, making sure I have all the essentials (laptop charger, thumb drive, notebook, camera) and giving Deb last-minute instructions.

When next you hear from me, (hopefully) I will be in France....

(and bon anniversaire to [livejournal.com profile] leethomas [today], lj-user-Madame-not-listing-her-birthday [today], [livejournal.com profile] fashionista_35 [the 25th] and [livejournal.com profile] smoemeth [September 1st]!)
lauraanne_gilman: (citron presse)
Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] divanoir and [livejournal.com profile] terri_osborne!

And in foodie updates, I can now scratch mussels off my To Be Eaten list. They were...good. Not great, but good. I'll have to try them prepared a few different ways to make a final determination. However, I can give solid marks to Paradou, on Little W. 12th Street in NYC. Excellent food, solid service, very pretty little space. And it's always fun to be back in the Meatpacking District, watching all the Pretty People trying to be Pretty... (also: should anyone feel moved to buy me a bottle of St. Germain for my birthday? I wouldn't say no. Because, yum.)

Now it's back to work. Forty-eight hours left in which to reach goal...
lauraanne_gilman: (bigger boat)
Huh. Didn't I just clean up the office from my last project? What's with all these research books stacked on the floor? And the clippings up on the corkboard? And the scrawled-on map taped to the back of the door? The Moleskine (mmm, Moleskine) notebook filling up with jottings? The three half-empty mugs on my desk (ooops, *gathers them up and takes them into the kitchen*).

Oh. I must be working again.

Bye!

EtA: eeeek! And a HAPPY BIRTHDAY shoutout to [livejournal.com profile] house_draven! May the day be filled with joy, love, and a total lack of ouch!
lauraanne_gilman: (my job)
Two chapters to go. I could shove on and finish HARD MAGIC tonight, but there's a lot of stuff that requires reblocking, and I think I'd better have a half-night's sleep under my ear before I attempt it. Besides, Madame Editrix isn't in the office tomorrow [nor is Madame Agent], so I'd only be impressing myself

Meanwhile, to the girl with the crema and mocha skin on the 1 train this week, I'm sorry if I made you even remotely uncomfortable. I didn't mean to. Don't ever let anyone tell you that's a disfiguration. You're lovely, a two-legged calico kitten, and just as lively and fierce, and some day I am going to put you in a story and you will read it, or someone who knows you will read it, or someone who has never met you will read it and think, as I did, "there should be more people like this in the world."

And now, I need to fall over.

(oh, and happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] mt_yvr! Hope you're up to all sorts of no-good fun!)
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
Yesterday ended up being a day of everything-but-writing (okay, I got about 900 words written), and today I've got social obligations that take me away from the keyboard all day. Argh. Seriously, I could be offered the chance for The Most Perfect Day of Fun and I'd be thinking "but...story! Writing! Just let me have my keyboard for a few hours!"
Writers. We're not crazy, just a little... focused, sometimes.

And Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina! May it be a day totally without stress and only the very best of news.
lauraanne_gilman: (pooh)
to [livejournal.com profile] 0eris0 and [livejournal.com profile] stephen_dedman and [livejournal.com profile] debg.

I plead otherwise timezoned.

(and those of you on this continent can pick up your birthday prezzies when you are next at Ch. Felidae)
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] girasole and [livejournal.com profile] jaylake!

Writing annoyance of the day: the perfect response for a character would be to say "Do I look like a Wiki?" Except she's Talent, and so doesn't live on-line, and so wouldn't say that at all. Drat.

Meanwhile, a thought for all you aspiring and pre-published writers to contemplate: Once you are published, many of your dearest friends will buy and read your first work. And then never buy or read anything else of yours ever again. Not because they hated it-- they just won't get around to it. Get used to it, get over it. At least publicly.

I've been up since 5am. Not intentionally, no. On the plus side, I'm almost through my office-averaged 3 solid hours of work. Yay?

And now, for the weekend, I declare an Open Thread. Ask away on whatever topic flits through your brain. I will answer best I can. If I don't know the answer, I will make something up.
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
I am officially at the "OMFG I HATE this book" stage.

I expect this to last another 20,000 words, give or take an "and."

*sighs*

Knowing that this is not only part of the usual cycle, but also part of the "first book in a series and it's not as easy to get everyone to hit their marks as I'm used to with better-trained characters" trauma....doesn't make it any easier to deal with, no. Expect continued whinging and head-desking until we achieve breakthrough.

Sorry about that, chief.

In better news -- happy belated birthday, [livejournal.com profile] varkat! You distracted me with all that talk of wine, last night. ;-)
lauraanne_gilman: (pooh)
To [livejournal.com profile] kradical, the best baby brother I ever picked out. :-D

You are still a mere yoot, so I don't want to hear any damned whinging. Or I'll smack you with my cane.

(and now I am off to Boston for the weekend. Catch y'all later...)
lauraanne_gilman: (citron presse)
Some people love Christmas, or the Fourth of July, or their birthday... I love New Year's Eve. No matter how you celebrate it -- surrounded by thousands of strangers or gathered with only your best-beloved -- it's a powerful, simple celebration of change and survival and contemplation and anticipation.

I tend not to do year-end reviews for much the same reason I don't do year-end word counts: too much work to go back and pick up every wonderful or horrible thing that happened within a specific 12-month period. But overall, 2007 was:

A year of loss -- there were friends gone too suddenly too soon, political ideals dashed, and personal dreams withered. Plans that had to be scrapped, and ideas that went nowhere.

A year of growth -- with new and returning friends, new dreams, new understandings and insights both personal and professional. Some major goals were achieved, and expectation-bars raised.

I turned 40 and discovered it was a landmark I had been waiting for, not dreading. I traveled places I had never been, met people and saw things I had never encountered before, and stretched myself further, physically and emotionally, than I thought I could go. I wrote, in both established worlds and new ones, and read and danced and painted, cooked and learned and laughed, and did almost everything I set my mind to, even when plans changed in mid-motion.

2008 enters with a heap o' changes for me, all ones I'm anxiously looking forward to. New challenges, new friends and new experiences. I don't know which will be fabulous, and which will be 'we'll laugh about this later,' and which will become part of the story of my life that shapes me forever after. I'm sure that there will be some of them all.

Occasionally I hear people say "Next year has to be better!" No, it doesn't. It doesn't have to be worse, either. It's just another 12 months to do things in. Go, do.

And my wish for you all, as always, is that the best of the past year be the worst we face in the year to come!

And because I have no idea what sort of shape I will be in later [more due to travel and weather than overpartying], happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] ellen_datlow and the Kzin, and happy early birthday to [livejournal.com profile] quarkwiz and [livejournal.com profile] peggin!
lauraanne_gilman: (pooh)
instead simply say "happy birthday!" to my fellow celebrants [livejournal.com profile] writerkatie and we-really-were-separated-at-birth [livejournal.com profile] fashionista_35!

May the day be exactly as you might wish it to be.

EtA: All right, why today of all days of all the years do I actually hear "A Pirate Looks At 40" on the radio? Sheeeeesh
lauraanne_gilman: (s.u.r.i.)
Because you only, please the Universe, turn 40 once:

the planned menu for Sunday's brunch
(assuming the farmer's market has everything I need tomorrow, and subject to alst-minute amendments/changes)

souffle foie gras du canard with carmelized pear
tomato and goat cheese rounds
salmon mousse on toasts
prosciutto, lettuce & cream cheese rolls
chimichurri beef skewers
salad skewers
mini corn quiches
breads and bagels
dried fruit enrobed in chocolate
mini cheesecakes

iced tea
kir royales
mimosas
oj

The salmon has been poached in white wine (as have I), and set to cool. Tomorrow morning I will make it mousse-y, then marinate the beef and make the cheesecakes. Everything else can wait until Sunday morning, when I will discover if the Improvisational Chef's ability matches her plans WRT the foie gras....
lauraanne_gilman: (pooh)
*sounds kazoo*

Ahem.

Happy Birthday to You,
Happy birthday to You,
Happy Birthday, dear [personal profile] scarlettina!
Happy Birthday to You!

lauraanne_gilman: (pooh)
Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] dianora2!

And no, you're not old, 'cause that would make me older. So. We're both mere youths, still. ;-)
lauraanne_gilman: (gecko)
Happy late-but-not-quite-belated birthday, [livejournal.com profile] dochyel! Hope it was filled with music, laughter and love.

well, I had the week right, anyway....
lauraanne_gilman: (pooh)
Happy mutual birthday to [livejournal.com profile] fashionista_35 and [livejournal.com profile] writerkatie!

May it be all you could wish for, today and all the days until we celebrate again.
