For those of you who haven't had the chance or inclination to keep up with the non-flu non-financial news, Supreme Court Justice Souter is stepping down.

And, instead of George "I know her heart" Bush* making the decisions, we instead have a president with a respected jurisprudence background and training, a man whose lectures and public comments reflect an awareness that a Supreme must be aware of more than simply their own narrow worldview, when considering the long-term impact of their decisions

[from the NYT: In voting against the nomination of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. as a senator, Mr. Obama said that “adherence to precedent and rules of construction and interpretation will only get you through the 25th mile of the marathon.”... what concerned him most was the last mile, one that must take account of “broader perspectives on how the world works.”]

IOW, odds are he's not going to choose an old-school Dead White Man Yalie** of any gender or color.

The betting money is that he will appoint a woman, to even out the incredibly male-dominated Court and better reflect the reality of the American population. I can't see this as a bad thing, no matter her political views...if we're to become a gender-parity state, there first needs to be an evening out of power, and like 'em or loathe 'em, the Supremes are indeed a power -- and a long-term transforming power at that.

And once Souter is replaced, Obama will still have Ginsburg and Stevens (who are both, I think, slightly to the left of Souter) to replace. [there was no way, short of death, those three were going to step down before Bush was out of office, and I think they deserve kudos from every fuzzy wuzzy liberal on earth for that!)

Let the nomination games begin....

And lo, the meerkat is home (earlier than expected due to Family Things) from the usual fantabulous family gathering, only to discover two piteously hungry kittens who had been without fresh food or water for 36 hours, because their cat-sitter took "please feed them Friday" to mean "it's okay it you don't show up until after 9pm, assuming you were going to show up at all." The meerkat is...not pleased.

However, the MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS contest continues until midnight tonight and you have until midnight Sunday to enter the "Plausibility" contest to win your choice of the first three books in the Retrievers series in mass market (new contest starts on Monday)!

Slightly related: if you were to happen to eavesdrop on us yesterday afternoon:

Me: "I have to e-mail them later. They're talking shapeshifters but I don't have a were, I have an incubus." *pause* "Not many people can say that in the course of a business conversation."

My mom: O_O

And totally unrelated: For those who were part of the "what is Socialism" discussion early (or have just wondered where we're going with this regulated economy) you might want to check out the article in this weekend's New York Times: Weekend Opinionator: A Different Sort of Red America

[as an aside: is there such a thing as "today's newspaper" when you read it online, with the access to yesterday's articles and tomorrow's breaking news updates?]

Some things from the White House blog you might want to check out:

The unveiling of http://healthreform.gov/ effective today, and worth browsing, even if you already have a stable employer-subsidized medical plan.

"We are here today to discuss one of the greatest threats not just to the well-being of our families and the prosperity of our businesses, but to the very foundation of our economy – and that is the exploding cost of health care in America today." (full remarks available at http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/3/5/11956/64929/855/704945)

Also:

On Not lining the pockets of contractors . Priorities excerpt: The President signed a Presidential Memorandum that will reform government contracting by strengthening oversight and management of taxpayer dollars, ending unnecessary no-bid and cost-plus contracts and maximizing the use of competitive procurement processes, and clarifying rules prescribing when outsourcing is and is not appropriate. The OMB will be tasked with giving guidance to every agency on making sure contracts serve the taxpayers, not the contractors.

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka! May it be filled with much happy squee.
-----------------

Managed to get 2,000 new words yesterday, working around paperwork and Other Life Events. Now all I have to do is keep that pace for another month, and it's smooth sailing. Um, yeah. Well, it's a goal. It's good to have goals, right? I also managed to write an entire scenelet that may not actually fit in the book, but was good to put down on the page -- it filled out a lot of the character interactions, and finally let me use some venom I've been saving for a special occasion. Never irritate a writer. You'll end up in a book, sooner rather than later, and it won't be pretty.
----------------------------------

I haven't been posting much about things financial or political because at this point you're either paying attention or your head's so firmly in the sand you've struck oil. But while we're all peeking carefully with one eye at the financial news, and wincing, there's other stuff going on in DC, too. From the New York Times this morning:

A few weeks before he left office, President George W. Bush told federal officials that, in effect, they did not have to bother getting the advice of wildlife experts before taking actions that might harm plants or animals protected by the Endangered Species Act.

On Tuesday, President Obama said that, in effect, they did.

Saving the future, one presidential edict at a time. (okay, it's not a total reversal. It's moving in the right direction, for a change. Save the polar bear. Save the world. [Not just the humans who live on it])
-----------------------

And now I must get to that to-do list. Y'all have a good day, y'hear?

A quick braindump:

Oh Leverage, how you do rock my world. You are smart and pretty and funny, and don't mind too much the fancifulness of your premise because you are smart and pretty and funny. And Parker is such a sweet psychotic. Thank you for promising to come back this summer. That makes me very happy.

It also made me happy to discover that what the GOP disdainfully refers to as a "nanny state," the president apparently defines as "cleaning up the mess Baby made." I'm not much for speeches from any president (it's all propaganda, even when it's YOUR propaganda) but flinching from hearing hard truths and uncomfortable decisions is so much to be preferred to flinching from hearing Teh Stooopid.

And some very interesting comments from Trained Political Pundits in the aftermath, about how Obama's attempted bi-partismanship isn't aimed at the GOP, who believe they cannot reach back or lose whatever they think they're holding onto, but the independent voters. Obama reached out and was rebuffed, purely for the sin of Not Being GOP. That's going to hurt someone, PR-wise, and so far, it's not Obama.

Took the day off from Pack of Lies yesterday, and worked on a couple of new projects, and some promotional stuff for on-going books, as well as dealing with the long-distance chaos of trying to migrate the web site to its new home. We seem to be having Technical Difficulties. :-( But soon it will be done, and I will be able to muck about with the updates on a much more regular basis, and won't you be sorry then?

(that might also spell the end of the Cosa Nostradamus On-Line, as the content is folded into the main site. We'll see.)

I also managed to get some wonderful, if quick, footage of Pandora, blissed on catnip, almost falling off the desk. but if I post it, you will all see the terribly disorganized state of my office, and I'm not sure I can stand the shame...

Oh, wotthehell.

Busy day today (I have to go into Manhattan to pace out a scene... oh the trauma that is my life -- and then tax stuff. Okay, there's trauma) but I figured I'd leave you with one really useful thing today:

http://www.recovery.gov/

Between that and whitehouse.gov, I'm thinking we're actually on our way to achieving the "transparent government for the people, by the people" dream. Or being snowed by the abuse of direct communication medium. I'm sure both sides have their wignuttery arguments. It's still so very very cool.
lauraanne_gilman: (lol)
Via GalleyCat, this wonderful, NSFW article, talking about Obama's outtakes while recording his autobiography, Dreams From My Father.

"Best of all? When reading the audiobook version of his bio, Obama does impressions of Ray’s manner of speech. Swear words and all. It’s f**king awesome. And it’s a way of talking we probably won’t be hearing from him now that he’s POTUS."

I say, a little more swearing in the White House, please. The man can put together a lovely sentence, complete with a beginning, an end, and a point. Why assume his intemperate language would be any less enthralling?

It's not as though he's going to win any followers among the tight-arsed and the mealy-mouthed, anyway, and maybe "will you m***********s shut up, sit down, and listen to what a POTUS is telling you?" will get through some GOP heads....

Ah well. A citizen can dream....

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama issued four executive orders Thursday to demonstrate a clean break from the Bush administration on the war on terror, including one requiring that the U.S. military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay be closed within a year.

A second executive order formally bans torture by requiring that the Army field manual be used as the guide for terror interrogations. The order essentially ends the Bush administration's CIA program of enhanced interrogation methods.

A damn good start. Also necessary, if anyone was to take him and his stated goals seriously.

On my way home now (I love wi-fi enabled transport) and facing another two weeks of serious work to catch up. But it was worth it. My thanks to Nea and Mo, who were wonderful hosts.

And, because it's been wondered elsewhere why so many of us turn to President Obama -- not with blind idolation, as some assume, but with a clear-eyed and somewhat battered sense of hope and respect?

He is my president. cut to spare those tired of politics already )

EtA: also?

WASHINGTON (AP) — One of President Barack Obama's first acts is to order federal agencies to halt all pending regulations until his administration can review them.

The order went out Tuesday afternoon, shortly after Obama was inaugurated president, in a memorandum signed by new White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. The notice of the action was contained in the first press release sent out by Obama's White House, and it came from deputy press secretary Bill Burton.

and, alas, the perils of wi-fi -- I just got a work e-mail. Back to't....

Y'know, you get so revved up, and so cold, you don't realize how tired you are. Then you warm up, and OMG the ow. So. Very. Sore.

I think that Chief Justice Roberts screwed up the oath because he was nervous -- because the secret service had explained to him that it was his responsibility to throw himself in front of President (!) Obama in case of danger.

(and yes, Fox News is already claiming the oath isn't valid because of the misspeaking. Wankers.)
lauraanne_gilman: (pooh)
also known as "my damn phone died."

Where was I?

Oh, right. Short version: Down at 7th & D, waiting to get past the checkpoint...that never opened. Reportedly the Secret Service changed the rules between midnight and 5 am and the cops decided not to share with the rest of us. DC cops haven't been top of my list since Disclave 97, but it's sad when I get more info from the (cute) FBI guy!

Finally made it onto the Mall, along with millions and millions of other people, including very nice folk from Australia (oi oi oi! to you guys too), Canada, France, Anchorage and California. And...what can I say? It was amazing, moving, beautiful -- and occasionally really funny when the voiceover on the jumbotron picked up the Secret Service mikes ("junior is getting on the elevator").

It was also goddamn cold. But we didn't care. Very loud crowd cheers for past presidents (even Bush Sr),boos for Shrub (I refrained), and I and a few others turned our backs when Rick Warren spoke. A small gesture but important to me. The swearing-ins were moving, the John Williams composition was exquisite to hear, and Obama's speech was, to put it mildly, a crowd-pleaser. As Nea said, "the 'my pleasure to present the 44th president' line was the 'we are changing our call sign" moment"*

And then, when the announcement was made that the helicopter carrying Shrub had left the Mall, the crowd we were in sang "hey hey hey, good-bye."

And then we had an excellent lunch, defrosted, and came home to collapse with a bottle of Champagne and chocolates. :-)

Oh, and my phone seems to have recovered, now that we're indoors. It really was that cold out.

There are photos, but they'll be posted later.

ETA: OMG I almost forgot. On our way in, there were the usual Jesus Chanters of some unknown sect, with signs telling people to repent etc, along with a sign listing those whow ere damned. Those are,I swear this is the truth, "women murdering babies, Jesus-mockers, Mormons, and sports nuts." No, really. Srsly. Many were the heads scratched over that.

Still slogging through the line by line note-check process on VINEART WAR: FLESH & FIRE. Light is rumored at the end of the tunnel, but right now I hate this manuscript with a frustrated annoyance that means I'm really tired of the line-by-line and want to get down to the fun part of integrating the changes into the text-as-a-whole. Soon. Very soon. I feel guilty for taking time off, but -- history. If I have to be present for the Worst, I want to be there for the best of our generation(s),too.

And so off to bed in a bit, as the plan is to get up at Oh Fkcu Early and be One With History. Being mostly-adults, we have agreed that if the weather/crowds/exhaustion gets too much, we will do the sane thing and retreat to a pre-arranged gathering point where there will be many wide-screen televisions.

If I can figure out how to photo-blog from my phone, I'll update as we go.

Had brunch with an old friend from high school, then came back and finished off the freelance gig from hell. Tonight, back to the revisions. But for now, I'm about to take over the kitchen to make garlic steak and spinach risotto, accompanied by a 1997 Brunello.

(time passes)

Watching the replay of the 'We are One' Concert at The Memorial. We stood for the national anthem. Can't remember the last time I felt that urge. Sang along with Bruce, and cried (I always cry at 'The Rising.). Sang along with Mary Bilge, even as we were marveling at her 6" heels. Were rapt during the speeches. Feel the surge of hope coming through the land again. Even I, cautious and cynical, feel it.

"things are gonna be much better, if you only will."

ETA: Anyone else hold their breath waiting for Samuel L Jackson to let slip with an "I got on that bus to go home, m**********r?"

Also? As much as I am inspired by Obama? I <3 Joe Biden.

How's everyone else spending this Inauguration weekend?

1. The Good: Happy (almost belated) birthday, [livejournal.com profile] deire! Hope it was a dramallama-free day...

2. The Bad: Watching the news, we're left still wondering at who might actually be behind the terrorist attacks, and why they chose the targets they did. My mother (who knows a bit about the region, professionally) and I have both been thinking 'something about all this doesn't quite make sense...' I mean, as much as terrorism ever makes sense-as-sane-people-see-it. The actions and the politics and the probable/intended results aren't quite aligning yet. *sighs* I don't think humanity is ever going to get its collective shit together, no. We're still territorial apes, no matter if we're trampling each other for the sake of saving $ in our holiday shopping or shooting each other in cold blood over geo-political religious differences. *despairs*

3. The comic relief: this? Cracked me up.

http://www.henryhemp.com/node/3010

"OTTAWA — Researchers say they have located the world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China...The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly "cultivated for psychoactive purposes," rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany....The 18 researchers, most of them based in China, subjected the cannabis to a battery of tests, including carbon dating and genetic analysis. Scientists also tried to germinate 100 of the seeds found in the cache, without success."

Humanity can be amusing and playful apes, too. Pity we don't do more of that.

- Happy family news: eldest nephew got his first acceptance to one of his top-pick schools: University of Pittsburgh! And now all breathe again, and don't panic at the sound of the mail drop quite so much....

- An interesting and possibly useful article about the psychology of saving (or not) in These Perilous Times. How many of those traits do you recognize?

- The California Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to review legal challenges to Prop. 8, the voter initiative that restored a ban on same-sex marriage, but refused to permit gay weddings to resume pending a ruling in March. And so now we wait. Meanwhile, after a settlement in NJ, EHarmony's going to start 'allowing' same-sex matches via their website. California, the East Cast is trumping you in civil rights. That's gotta sting....

- Meanwhile, Al Qaeda resurfaced with a message for Pres-elect Obama, among other taunts calling him a "house Negro." Duuuudes. I bet he heard worse from racist asshats by the time he was 10. And I understand you're pissed that he was raised a Christian instead of a Muslim like his (absent) dad, but saying he's the "direct opposite of honorable black Americans" like Malcolm X? *snort* You need better insults. Really. 'Cause you didn't even make him blink. Hell, you didn't even make his daughters blink.

Coffee done. Off to work I go...

After a red-ink day (the ongoing teardown and rebuild of Vinart #1, now with Extra! Added! Swearing), it was soothing to switch to blue ink. The contracts for Mustang and Dragon Virus came, and I spent the morning [for my definition of morning, which is 6-10am] going over them (no surprises, but I don't sign legal documents without knowing what's in them) and packing them up for mailing.

There. That's done. Back to the swearing.

[it's always this way with a new universe. You think you know the rules and then suddenly something come into focus and whoa, lookit that, Newton was right and all the laws have to be rewritten! Textbook publishers must've hated Newton]

Oh, and for those who care about such things, pending someone at Pocket going "is not!," we're looking at VINEART WAR, BOOK 1: FLESH AND FIRE.

Assuming I finish the fkcuer in time. Send coffee chocolate towelboys a masseuse and a bottle of bourbon.

I managed to get everything on my to-do list, done.

But I had, intentionally, pulled back from my usual "be efficient" mode to "be reasonable" mode when making the list.

So I don't feel like I accomplished anything near 100% today.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Shaddup.

EtA: dinner with my folks tonight, talking about (what else) the election, and my dad said something that made me think.

"Obama reminds me of Kennedy. Bobby, I mean."

And, yanno? Yeah.

Yeah.
