1) Today is the official on-sale date for BLOOD FROM STONE [BN/Powell's/Amazon]. With this book, Wren and Sergei's story ends -- for the time being, anyway. Bonnie and her crew get a run now, and I'm delighted to be playing with them, but... *blows nose, pretends it's just from the flu bug*

2) Today is the official on-sale date for BLOOD FROM STONE, so Monday's contest is now officially closed. I'll be sorting and choosing a winner today.

3) Today is also National "Buy Indie" Day. If you haven't already ordered your copy from a chain (and even if you have!) find a local independent bookstore and show 'em some love. Remember -- local dollars spent locally tend to STAY local!

4) A reminder for the completists: ILLUMINATION (Bonnie's story) is available in UNUSUAL SUSPECTS (edited by Dana Stabenow) and INFERNO (PB's story) is available at www.bookviewcafe.com (for the quite reasonable price of 99 cents!)

5) Today is also the start of the Brenda Novak On-Line Auction to Benefit Diabetes Research! Hundreds and hundreds of Fabulous Prizes! to bid for, including the full set of Retriever novels and an advance ARC of FLESH & FIRE . Bid early, bid often!

First off: congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] cypherindigo, the winner of last Monday's contest*! Everyone else who entered is now entered as well to win a copy of BLOOD FROM STONE.

And now, in the final run-up to Friday's official release date** of BLOOD FROM STONE, we have one last contest...

Tell me who is your favorite secondary character in the series.

That's it. That's all. Excepting Wren, Sergei and PB... who is your favorite?

If you give me a name, you're entered once to win.
If you give me a name and a reason, you get entered twice.

(yes, if you entered the previous contest you can enter again and double [or triple] your chances to win!)

*random winners are chosen by the oh so scientific method of randomly assigning numbers to each entry and then using random.org to pick a winner.
** yeah, I know it's already shipping. Shhhh.....

Okay, not quite, but it may seem that way this month, since there's Stuff going on in April.

First, all week the authors included in the MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS anthology will be blogging and giving away stuff! Here's the schedule:

April 6 - Michele Hauf
April 7 - Bonnie Vanak
April 8 - Karen Whiddon
April 9 - Lori Devoti
April 10 - Anna Leonard (that would be, yes, me.)
April 11 - Vivi Anna

Stop by their blogs all week, to see what's going on! My contest will start on the 10th, and run for 48 hours. Comment on that post, and you'll be included in a drawing to win a copy of MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS, a copy of THE NIGHT SERPENT, and -- because this is me, and I know you guys -- chocolate! And none of that Hershey's or Godiva stuff, either. :-) You don't have to guess anything or write anything more than "hi!" -- all you have to do is comment.

And now for today's contest/challenge:

Yesterday, coming back from the Park, I saw something odd: someone on the 3rd floor had put a knife block -- complete with knives! -- on the ledge outside their window.

(alas, I didn't get a picture of it, being too damn tired to rummage for my camera at that point).

So. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to establish plausibility: why was it left there? What was the reason, the purpose, the intent? Plausibility is the important thing here: make me believe it! You have 75 words, maximum. The contest will close on Friday, and the winner will be announced next Monday, at which point another contest will be announced, every Monday until BLOOD FROM STONE is released on May 4th.

Best response to this challenge as chosen by me (ties to be broken by A Celebrity Judge) will get a copy of the new mass market edition of CURSE THE DARK. And, oh what the hell -- chocolate!

[you do not have to be a LJ member to enter/win.!]

Finishing up the proofs for BLOOD FROM STONE, at the point where all hell is breaking loose and everything's finally coming together, and one line suddenly stood up from the page, slapped me across the face, and said THIS! HERE! THIS IS THE POINT! And be damned if it didn't tie into everything previously set up, all the crossed trails and dropped hints, the side comments and, yes,the fortune cookie....

I know I wrote it. I know I planned it, however subconsciously. But damned if I didn't just stop and go "wow, that's gooooooood. That works."

I loves my job sometimes. Even the drudgy bits that make me want to gnaw my leg off in frustration.

The plans for today (making cookies and other party-prep) have been modified by the arrival of author proofs for BLOOD FROM STONE. They're due back on the 7th, tho, so for once I'm not feeling a mad rush about them. Yay for the holidays actually adding time to schedule, not depleting it!

So, cookies and proofs. I call that a Good Plan.

[specifically, meringues, sugar cookies and, if I have energy, tortes. Gingerbread will have to wait for another day]

Also, I am having coffee for the first time since coming down with the Ugh/Sinus Sludge last Friday (coffee when I'm sick is always a Bad Idea). Yay! My taste buds are still out of whack a bit, but the caffeine is welcome...

EtA: note to self: if eggs are not forming nice peaks, it is time to stop, have another cup of coffee, and then restart using only egg WHITES this time, not whole eggs.

moron.

Damn. I missed my anniversary. Five years a freelancer, this week. Yay?

Lots of changes since then. Some good, some sad, all of them a part in landing me here, where I am content. There are far worse fates.

And yet, no matter how many times it's happened since then, I'm never ready...

You can pre-order BLOOD FROM STONE now.

eeeek.

At Amazon, anyway. B&N and Borders some day as well, I suppose, but they're not admitting to it yet.

Or, you can pre-order it from a local independent store..

Why should you pre-order? Because that tells the stores they will have money coming in, so they will order the copies, so the publisher will print the copies, so everyone gets their copies and the wheels of publishing keep turning.... and you still don't have to pay until the book actually comes in!

As always, send me an e-mail [LAG(at)lauraannegilman(dot)net] telling me you pre-ordered it, and I will send you a signed bookplate.

Mmm. Warm pear-and-bacon salad for dinner. Life is good.

Almost ready to send this sucker back for copyedit (and we mean it, this time!). Second-pass revisions are strange beasts -- you're building on stuff that you've already built on and sometimes it turns out you have to tear something down rather than rebuild it, and sometimes you stare at something and think "nope, that was right, that's as good as it's going to work" and walk away from it before you do damage. We were right to give it another once-over -- but now I worry about new errors being introduced, and feel the urge to lay on an extra cone of burnt offerings to the copyeditor.... But it's good. It works. I found myself getting caught up in the story as I was working, even knowing what was going on, and that's a very good thing.

And since I haven't done you guys a snippet in a while, here's a sizable one. There's just one wee spoiler you might not even notice...

BLOOD FROM STONE, coming in May 2009 )

And now I'm going to go stare at the tv for a while. If we're not all gone *poof* in the wee hours by a sudden black hole, I'll see y'all tomorrow.
lauraanne_gilman: (surrender the manuscript)
Hard Magic [a.k.a. "Bonnie 1"] is due to Luna August 1st, which... probably isn't going to happen. But it will be in editorial hands before I skip town. So, glittering darkly in the summer skies over NYC, the flag is flying...

Also, if anyone wants to take a closer look at the preliminary art for BLOOD FROM STONE, it's up over at The Cosa Nostradamus Online
lauraanne_gilman: (Blood from Stone)
1. You know your life is a little busy when you come home to a box from your publisher in front of your door and you stare at it blankly before suddenly thinking "oh, right! Book out in September!" Anna Leonard's first book is in-print, if not quite ready to ship. I'll be showing it off at Necon this weekend...

2. *squee* I've been invited to attend Le fĂȘte de la Vouivre when I'm in Burgundy. It sounds muchly cool...

3. And I have an early glimpse at the cover for BLOOD FROM STONE and once again, while I'm not quite sure the artist read the same manuscript I sent them, it's still pretty damn neat.... (hint: see icon)

4. my sff.net mail seems to be bouncing again. If you've tried to send me something there, try again with the same prefix, at gmail.com

5. I have nothing political to say that would not involve me swearing and spluttering and generally losing my cool. I hate everyone connected with D.C. except Dodd, at this point....

oh, and [livejournal.com profile] fashionista_35! Do you have my cell number? Ping me!

It's difficult to diet when you're also working on perfecting your wonton-making skills. Just sayin'... (Rabbi David used to assure me that tortillas were Mexican matzo. I wonder if I can claim wonton wrappers as Chinese matzo? Nah, probably not....)

For the wine geeks: Last night I attended a wine-tasting for several German producers. Since I'm always on the lookout for a good Riesling, I went with high hopes and a ready wallet. Unfortunately, while some of them were quite good (the 2005 Knebel Reisling Winninger Rottgen Spatlese Trocken [$23] and the 2002 Stein Reisling Bremmer Calmont Auslese [$27]), overall I wasn't knocked out by anything. I did, however, enjoy speaking to the winemakers and my fellow tasters, who ran the gamut from off-the-street to a young Frenchwoman with considerable academic and practical knowledge of wines.

One wine I can recommend is the 2005 Stein Reisling Bremmer Calmont Spatlese Trocken, at $18. Very nice, smooth and easy drinking, we agreed that this was a wine you could open over appetizers, and keep drinking through an entire Spring or Summer meal.

Why I love my editor, #438925: In the e-mail today, the preliminary copy for BLOOD FROM STONE, with more or less carte blanc to change it as needed. (considering they pay me to write copy for other people, this isn't exactly a leap of faith. But it's something she doesn't have to do, and does.)

Hrm. And now to decide: more writing, or make like a cat and curl up in the sunlight for a nap? *looks at projected schedule for rest of year, goes back to desk*
lauraanne_gilman: (citron presse)
It took me longer than planned, but revisions for BLOOD FROM STONE are done. I've polished and tightened and still managed to add another 4,000 words to bring me within striking distance -- as always -- of the contracted-for word count.

I'll see it once more in line edit, and then again in proofs, and then it goes away, and... and as much as I really needed a break, I find myself feeling melancholy, too. I've had their voices in my head since 2001, more or less, for six books and three short stories, and while I'm enjoying the helll out of HARD MAGIC, Bonnie and the crew are good new friends, while Sergei, Wren and P.B. are old and dear comrades. Silver and gold.

Odds are good that there will be more Wren and Sergei stories. I think I know where they go from here, what adventures they will face. But even if Luna signs me up for more books tomorrow, they won't be written right away. HARD MAGIC and the two other books have first claim on my time and brain. And that is how it should be. And yet...

I've poured myself a glass of the good shit -- Glenmorangie 1989, single cask rare -- and am raising a toast: To Wren and Sergei. May their stories only grow in the telling.
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
The Done:

The revisions are done. I still have to double-check a few details, but I think I've gotten everything else nailed down.

Book's not bad, actually. In another year or so, when it's published, I don't think it will make me cringe. (translation from writer-speak: it's really very good, and I am proud of it). Now I have to go do virtual paperwork for our publicist....

------------------------
The Starting:

Operation 'Save the Bedroom.' The previous owner had a...very different style from me, and part of that included a rather froo-froo bedroom, complete with beaded gaze curtains and pumpkin-colored walls. It actually wasn't horrible...just not me. So this weekend, that All Changes. There may or may not be pic-blogging, depending on our mood and exhaustion levels...

------------------------
The Schedule (Lunacon):

Friday 5PM
To Venture Beyond Prydain - A Tribute to Lloyd Alexander
Description: In May of this year, we lost one of fantasy's greats, Lloyd Alexander, best known for The Chronicles of Prydain. Unlike many fantasy tales which glorify war, the heroes of Prydain, like their author, believed that "... there is greater honor in a field well-plowed than a field steeped in blood." Discuss the author, his work, and his legacy.
Participants: Sean P. Fodera[M], Laura Anne Gilman, Dennis McCunney, Susan Shwartz,

Saturday 11AM
David Honigsberg Life Jam
Description: Come celebrate the life of David Honigsberg: musician, rabbi, scholar, writer, gamer, and mensch. We'll be celebrating his memory in a way that he would appreciate, so expect stories and music and friendship and laughter. Bring your best pix, stories, recordings; any extra copies can go into the celebration box. Sign the guestbook and listen to the impromptu concert and open mic.

Saturday 12pm
The Fantastic City: Looking at Urban Fantasy
Description: Why is urban fantasy urban, not just modern? What are great elements of cities appropriated from history or created whole cloth for fantastical stories? Authors and fans discuss some of their favorite urban creations, and the cities of others they love to read about.
Participants: Laura Anne Gilman, Ellen Kushner[M], KT Pinto, David Sklar,

Saturday 2PM
Pitfalls and Pratfalls in Your New Career
Description: The writing and publishing worlds are extremely close...and kind of prone to gossip. A misstep early on in one's career could have consequences lasting long after your initial blushes have faded. A good explanation of how to avoid putting your foot in your mouth before you even get it in the door.
Participants: Marilyn Brahen, Laura Anne Gilman, Arthur D. Hlavaty, Karl Kofoed,

Saturday 5PM
Vampires: Soooo Five Minutes Ago
Description: Are vampires passe? Have Buffy and Angel ruined the genre forever? Have vampires gone from scary things of nightmares to fluffy heroes and brooding lovers? How can we invigorate these ones terrifying creatures--or do we even want to?
Participants: Susan de Guardiola, Keith DeCandido, Laura Anne Gilman, Michael Grapin, KT Pinto[M],

Saturday 7PM
Autographing: Laura Anne Gilman, Delia Sherman

(due to schedule conflicts, I won't be at Lunacon on Sunday)
lauraanne_gilman: (brain. hurts.)
I am now officially tired of everything. Politics, weather, people, this damn book...

My brain is so focused, I forgot what day of the week it is. Seriously (if this were a sitcom, it might have been funny. It was just embarassing).

I also just realized that I've only had bagels and a lot of diet coke all day (not good when one is hypoglycemic). *pauses to go into the kitchen* There is now a piscean filet [with butter, lemon slices, dill, and fresh ginger] baking in the oven, yay protein.

A good day of work, but there's still more than half the book to go. If I didn't occasionally come across sections that please me, I'd be tempted to roundfile the entire thing and run off to become a yak-herder. I know it's a damn good book and people will be very happy with What Happens. I'm just so tired of it at this point. By the time I see the proofs, hopefully I'll have recovered.

On the plus side, on March 8th, the SciFi channel's Saturday monster movie is "Ogre." Two tons of peevy man-eater terrorizing what looks like Basic Pacific Northwest Town #3, starring John "Bo Duke" Schneider. I am like a cat presented with a box I know is filled with the China White of catnip....
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
So, last night ended being about red wine risotto with beef and pignoli, with parmesan shavings, since I had everything to-hand aready.

In the future I'd probably toast the pignoli before adding it, but otherwise...yeah, this one worked well.

The 1998 Barolo served with probably helped.

Nice dinner. Now I get to take my entire printed manuscript of BLOOD FROM STONE off into a corner and tear through it with red pencil and blue highligher and a lot, I say a LOT of caffeine. Expect me when you see me.

here be the dinner-details )

Apparently, the part of "no cats on the desk" that the cats didn't understand was "no."

First pass revisions for BLOOD FROM STONE are complete. I estimate about a thousand words removed, and two thousand added. And a compromise between what I wanted and what Madame Editrix wanted in one particular scene has been achieved, and is not displeasing.

Now to let it sit for a while, and rest my brain (or, yaknow, work on other things also due). Then I get to do the line-by-line read. Wheeee.....

And it is still snowing. Hey, [livejournal.com profile] kradical, wanna go sledding?
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
Srsly. Work continues, but I am constantly distracted and twitchy, like a hopped-up seven-year-old. Flit flit flit oooo shiny flit flit flit.

Even doing two loads of laundry and hanging with my Super for a while has not settled me down.

Two more chapters' worth of notes to go through, and then I'm onto the fine-tuning and polishing. Despite flittage, I am on schedule -- which is good, as more has just been ladled onto my plate. But more on that later...

Lunch. I should have lunch at some point before it becomes dinner, non?

EtA: and no, no more caffeine than usual, thanks for asking.
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
iTunes just went from "Etude in C minor" (Vladimir Horowitz) to "The Card Cheat" (The Clash) to "Jaco" (Pat Metheny Group). Not quite as brain-breaking as some possible combinations that might have come up, but it caught my attention....

Meanwhile, revisions are in progress. A few minor queries knocked off with a line or two of explanations, and I have smoothed one plot-tangle with a change that leaves the majority of the thread untouched and yet manages to tie it back nicely into another thread without disturbing that thread beyond a few lines here and there, and suits all the players' personalities. Excuse me, I think I just pulled a muscle patting myself on the back.

(and I've just been reminded that I have to go buy the felines their kitty-crack, as there's only one can left. That could get...ugly, if not remedied, yes)

EtA: cats has fud. All is well. Two-legs gets to go back to work.

Done with Stage 4.

Yay.

I have also dealt with all pending e-mail, updated my budget, dealt with the last remaining address changes (I hope), and various and sundry other things that weren't quite cat-waxing.

Onward to editorial discussions of various points on the morrow, and then it's time to write.
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
1. Print the letter out and skim it quickly, allowing only the major points to jump out and let me know the general tone [did I pass? Fail? Am I going to have to fall on my sword or collapse in relief?]

2. Do everything else on to-do list before forcing self to sit down and actually re-read the letter.

3. Read the letter more carefully, letting the general tone of the letter sink in, seeing if I have a strong, immediate reaction to anything ["Oh, yeah!" or "Hell, no!"].

4. Start making scribbled notes on the letter, coming up with possible corrections/reworks, preparatory to talking things over with Madame Editrix on Monday.

5. Actual writing.

Current status: Stage 4.
