Friday was The Day that Didn't Happen (meetings were rescheduled, phone calls that were promised didn't happen, etc). Least said, the best. Although there were nice incidentals, good work, and a lovely dinner with a friend that day, too.

Saturday was My 5th Anniversary Living In NYC Party. A LOT of people showed up. A LOT of food and booze was consumed. A lot of talk and laughter and people NOT checking FB or Twitter. Yay party. I kicked people out around 11:30 because I'm old and tired and I was going to see many of them the next day anyway...

Sunday was the annual Superbowl Party, even though a team not the Giants was playing another team not the Giants. As always when that happens, I went in hoping for a fun, interesting, well-played game (and that my exhaustion doesn't end up with me face down in my chili, because a) ow and b) my friends would totally liveblog that).

And what we got was.... well, it was fun, and it was interesting, and it was certainly one for the history books, although not for the usual reasons! (for those who missed the game, there was a power outage that resulted in a major delay). I don't believe that "momentum" changed, but I do think that it gave the Niners' coach time to insert his boot firmly, because his team came out like someone had kicked a firecracker up their shorts and we had a hell of a post-brownout half.

Oh, and there's a new Bonnie & Venec short story up - and a recipe,  and a contest! - at
Fools For Love!

And now it's Monday again. I have Hopes for this week.  How about you?

lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
Well, that was a game, huh? So very glad I didn't have an emotional attachment to either team (or money on the game) because I was able to root for them both without hesitation -- if only to stop collecting so many penalties! I wonder how that game would have gone, if they'd been less sloppy. But still, any game with a 100 yard defensive touchdown is going to be one to remember...

And yeah, the Steelers won, but the Cards staged an impressive comeback in the second half, and it really could have gone either way, at the end. So, call it a Superbowl worth the watching.

And the chili seemed to go over well (it went), and Bruce rocked the halftime show, and everyone had a really good time, so yay! Kudos to the host & hostess, who open their home (and share their rockin' media system with us).

And now, to the Business of Monday. I was so tired I forgot to put water in the coffee machine when I turned it on. That's never good...
lauraanne_gilman: (meerkat and diet coke)
The apartment smells like chili* (gee, I wonder why) the cats are wondering why mom's not at her desk, and I have been informed that I should be rooting for Pittsburgh, as Pitt is still #1 Nephew's front-runner school choice.

I'd rather have had the Giants playing today, natch, but it will be fun to just kick back with friends and watch the game without the accompanying agita. And either way, there will be Stadium Cake! :-) And don't forget the halftime show! *is Bruce-cheerful*

For those about to couch, we raise our beer and chips in salute. The rest of the world, we'll see you on Monday morning.

I'm too old for this shit. Srsly. Foly huck.

(EtA: fortunately, I am the sort of fan who spends 3 hours shouting and swearing and then doesn't think much about it until the next game. Let the pros worry about stats and whatnot -- I'm just here to have fun.)
lauraanne_gilman: (naptime)
I am home. I am *splat* But it's a good splat...

Saturday was being meerkat-about-town with [livejournal.com profile] neadods and [livejournal.com profile] maureen_the_mad, neither of whom I get to see anywhere near enough. So that was lovely. Then I went over to a T-Mobile store where I got to play with my new phone (yes, I've made my choice) and then it was out to the wilds of New Jersey with M, for prime rib that couldn't be beat with [livejournal.com profile] quarkwiz and her P. Woke at Eeek Ack Emma with two cats not my own cuddled at hip and toes, staggered about like a half-awake thing, and then headed out for a day of tailgating and GIANTS!

We got to the stadium around 8:30, set up shop, and partied with the rest of the regulars until it was time to go in for the game pause for the story of quarkwiz and the mimosas )

The seats were amazing -- lower level, around the 10 yard line, row 8. A perfect football day -- chilly, sunny, and just enough wind to make things interesting. The game was infuriating, exhilarating, amazing, and a hashmark in the Win column. All good. (and the peewees who got a chance to play at halftime were adorable, and clearly having the time of their lives, having a stadium full of people cheer them on).

life was not without its share of drunks and idiots, however... )

Anyway. Am home. Am splat. Tomorrow the work thing starts up again.

As promised, you heard it here first: you can now pre-order Curse the Dark and Bring it On in mass market paperback from Amazon (and so, presumably, your bookstore of choice, as well). If you know you're gonna want it (and you know you will) why not order it now and have it done? My publisher will thank you. (really. they will. Even if I have to drag it out of them. If I see a noticeable jump in pre-order numbers on Amazon, I will drag a representative over here and have them thank you. How'bout that for customer service?))

Also, I can't remember who gave me that stone mortar and pestle, but thank you again! I ground a bunch of spices this morning (I'm making a lamb tagine) and not only does my kitchen smell wonderful now, but my aggravations are mollified. :-)

and now on to the evening's t.v. roundup:

1. Bush's little speech just made me want to dig my heels in further and demand more accountability, not less. I'm contrary that way, yes. When someone I already don't trust tells me to jump Because It's For My Own Good and They Know Best [even though They got us into this], I back away from the ledge. But that's just me.

2. The writers of "Bones" have redeemed themselves considerably. Poor Zack. For a brilliant alien creature, he's such an idiot. But their idea of what a "publisher" looks/dresses/talks like? Okay, let me break it to you gently, guys. Publishers of major houses look, dress, and talk like any other executive of any other corporation. They absolutely don't look/dress/talk like the director of a cheap porn movie from the 1970's. Sorry.

3. You know a show's got it goin' on when you watch the entire show standing up and pacing. Welcome back, Criminal Minds. We missed you.... [although for spoilers ) Also, the off-timing because of #1 kept throwing me in terms of pacing the plot. I wasn't sure if they would for more spoilers ) I did like the ending. Poor Hotch. Poor Morgan. You idiot.]

3a. I still have trouble seeing my city get beat up. Especially under a terrorist attack scenario. Not any kind of active reaction, but a passive awareness of the fact that it disturbs me. Interesting, to map my progress that way.

4. Letterman was really, really funny (in an "I'm bitter, damn it" way) about McCain canceling on him at the 11th hour. McCain's handlers really should have timed their decision better. Pissing off a national tv host with an office of pretty damn good comedy writers on-call is never a good idea.

5. Plexico, you eeeeediot. [the previous will only make sense to Giants fans]
lauraanne_gilman: (truth to power)
Hello my fellow US Citizens (the rest of you can skip down to the last item in this post):

You're probably tired of me sounding the alarm and telling you to get up and DO, but I'm going to do it again. More, I'm going on record as saying that if you're not calling your representative critter first thing Monday morning and asking if they've LOST THEIR MINDS regarding this baby-with-the-bathwater bailout proposal (hint: you want to them to vote no), you've drunk some very bad kool-aid. Running scared into a Really Bad Idea is far worse than holding scared for a halfway-responsible one, especially when the Really Bad Idea basically equals giving all our money to the wipes who screwed up in the first place, and not putting ANY restrictions on what they can do with it for two years. WTF?

Scared + Stupid = Doubly Screwed.
--------------------------

On the political side, a few pics from what's being billed as the largest rally in Alaska. I am reminded of all the New Yorkers who went "oh lord, NO!" when Rudy tried to go national... it pays listen to the people who had to put up with them locally, folks...

behind the cut, because that's only polite to the two of you still on dialup... )

-------
In less important but satisfying news, the Giants won. Barely, in OT, in a game they should have put away early. But they won and nobody looked hurt, so yay for that....

Oh, and if you're still reading, the web site's been updated. Some new excerpts, some new quotes, some new details on VINEART WAR....
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
Spent Sunday afternoon hidden in a downtown bar with a bunch of fellow Giants fans, some early-arriving Jets fans, a few random Redskin fans, and a bunch of very rowdy and enthusiastic Detroit fans who got very very quiet as the game ended. Sorry, guys. But I was rooting against you just because your fight song was so damn annoying. For those of you who don't follow such things -- yeah, the Giants won (41-13).

Mass transit to/from the game: $4
A steak-and-eggs brunch and two pints of Bass -- $35
Being carded by the bouncer: priceless.
Being hit on by a 20-something Jets fan: hysterical.

But now it is Monday, the weekend has been rolled up and put to rest, and I'm back to the desk. And I've realized that trying to balance what the Story needs with the Actual Process of wine-making is making me second-guess the readership for Vineart War. The history/geography/politics/religion I have no trouble messing with -- readers understand second world/sidestep fantasy as not-quite-but-like. But how will people respond to something less malleable -- a scientific process, after all -- as being not-quite-but-like? Especially if they too are fans of the process and the results?

EtA: I'm not (hopefully) talking an infodump, but the details of the process as an ongoing thread within the books)

So, to reduce my headache, I'm actually asking the readership (or you guys, anyway):
[Poll #1259845]

In a different Universe, for those who don't want to wait for their news, there was an update to The Cosa Nostradamus OnLine over the weekend...

1. It is hot. And humid. And the sun is far too bright. Although I would like TS Hanna to move herself out into the ocean and leave us the hell alone, I would not mind if she sent us some clouds as she goes.

2. There are few things more amusing -- and yet very very sad -- than a startled cat snarfing wet food out his nose. Poor Boomer. He spent the next few minutes trying to clear his nose by sneezing, repeatedly.

3. Screw politics -- it's Football Season! I missed the Giants opening game because of a previous social obligation, but *woot*! Although I am scarred and careful about expecting anything beyond what actually happens, damn they looked good! *crosses fingers and makes offering to the football fairy*

4. Because I'm obviously not busy enough, a New Opportunity just showed up. Could be lots of fun, in the "giggle madly and make people nervous" kind of way. More if it happens.

5. And now, having had Good Conversation with Madame Editrix* on Cosa Nostradamus stuff and taken possession of my grocery delivery, it's back to work....

*okay, yeah, telephone conversations are work, they just don't feel like work.

Voting? Yeah, there was some of that. There was also a ticker tape parade, and lo I did go to it, despite my well-founded distrust of crowds, and especially sports crowds.

It was a great deal of fun, actually, even allowing for the @sswipes behind us who thought throwing each other around in a crowd would be fun (and then got snitty with the cops who came over and told them to cut it out or get locked up and miss the parade). Yay for it not raining, and yay for getting there early enough to get a spot right up against the barricades! I wasn't quite close enough to reach out and touch the trophy as it went past, but if I'd lunged forward....

I took some photos, but unless you're a J'nts fan they're probably pretty boring. A sampling... )

Many thanks to Bill E, whose 6'much" ran interference for my 5'few" as the crowd got thicker and rowdier (my calm but heartfelt "if you hit me with that elbow again I'll hit back, and it won't be in the face" seemed to have cowed the youth in question enough so that I remained unmolested after that).

The after-parade was actually more dangerous -- it seemed like every street was blocked off, funneling us all toward City Hall, which was blocked off as well for speeches and whatnot. The cops were trying to be helpful but there was only so much they could do. I got myself back to Riverdale eventually and had a late lunch in my local diner (yay! I have a local diner again!) while working on a client manuscript. Tonight, more work. And thus is the hooky-playing guilt assuaged...

18-1

Three things.

1. The Pats had a perfect season, and a longer one than any perfect team before. Kudos to them. Their post-season wasn't quite perfect. So it goes.

2. This game, while not quite the kill-me-now-whydoncha of the NFC championship, was a Damn Good Game. And a damn good Superbowl, more to the point. Everyone was in there until the very last second. Literally.

3. I have never before seen [livejournal.com profile] quarkwiz's spouse P jump up and down like that. Of course, I was jumping up and down and whooping along with him, so I may not be the most impartial judge....

Oh, and 4. I took shit for not liveblogging the game this year. I had to explain that I'd have been using too many swearwords. The truth is, I was just too damn tired to even contemplate liveblogging the thing. Next year.

EtA: and 5. Coach Tom has teeth! Who knew? :-D

I fall over go boom, now. Anyone else planning in going to the parade on Tuesday?
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
There are few things more amusing at 4:30 in the morning than tossing Boomer a q-tip and watching him do his Mighty Catch-and-Kill thing on it. (actually, this is pretty funny any time of day, but at 4:30 it was particularly distracting, almost distracting enough to make me forget that he was the damn reason I'm awake at this damn hour)

He did let me go back to sleep eventually, and is now sitting in the office window watching the cars go by with an air of absolute innocence. I am pleased to note, however, that he also looks tired. Vengeance is mine!

But this isn't a post about cats. It's simply to note that today is Superbowl Sunday, which means that in a few hours I will be hitting the road for an afternoon/evening of social rowdiness with friends in the name of football, tailgate foods, tailgate liquids, and the end of that gut-clenching nervousness that comes upon me whenever the Giants take the field. Thank god that's...

what? Oh. Right.

The Giants are in the Superbowl this year.

*quiet glee*

And you know what? It would be wonderful if they won, duh. I'd be thrilled. But it almost doesn't matter to me, so long as we get a good, interesting game. A blowout, even if your team is winning, is a bad Superbowl.

Yes, I really do mean that. See, the Giants are my team, yeah. But I love the damn game.

That said? Go Blue!
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
Holy shite.

holy farking shite.

WE'RE GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL!

*dies*

(and it didn't help that the concom kept buying me drinks.... wheee!)

EtA: All right, I'm now on my own laptop and not borrowing someone elses... we ([livejournal.com profile] quarkwiz and her spouse P, and a few others) sat in the hotel bar and watched the game, cheering and swearing and pacing up and down and yes I got down on my knees to beg for a good play once or twice, I admit it. Going in we had agreed that all we wanted was a good game, one that woulnd't make us cringe. Well, we got that, in spades. Hoo yah.

That was, in short, a Hell of a Game. Both teams played their frozen arses off, and nobody's got a damned thing to be ashamed of. Except maybe a certain kicker, who gets to live (barely) but dayum if he didn't take years off our lives with attempts 1 and 2...

The Superbowl is almost anticlimactic after this game. WTG, Blue!

w00t!

INTERCEPTION!

The last fricking play of the game (effectively) and Da Blue crew makes an interception in the end zone!

*dies of the high-fiving*

OMG, Eli is going on, and his brother isn't. Let the sports writers bite on THAT for a while...

when hearing someone refer to LT making a play on the field gives you a strange surge of temporal vertigo. There really should be only one.

So, Chargers/Colts are out of the way, and it's time for the Giants to show us if they got what they got.... And for those of you in southern New England? That W00t! you may have just heard? Was me.

I have no idea what the rest of the game may look like, but that Toomer run for a TD was a thing of beauty. We have sloppy joses, chips, cookies, and soda (and scotch). We're good for whatever comes.

Go J'nts!

(and did someone make sure that Jessica got her 50 yard line ticket?)
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
well, I didn't get to the movies today, as it turned out to be one of those lovely, blue sky, winter-sunlit mild weather days where if you don't get outside and breathe the air you feel like you've squandered some rare gift.

So [after arguing with the guys at Dell for a while] I went outside and gave Darcy a good seeing-to/cleaning out of the trunk, did nefarious things with black spray paint, and walked down to Nica's to pick up fresh veggies for dinner and some fruit and half-price stollen while I was there.

The cats sacked out on the bed and snoozed.

And tonight, there is football. Hoo boy is there football. The announcers seem surprised that all the starters are playing and playing hard, in what is a 'meaningless' end-of-season game (The Pats and Giants both have post-season berths locked up). I'm not surprised at all. The Pats all want to be in on the game that might send them 16-0 for NFL history. And the Giants?

The Giants are a wild-card team going into the playoffs. Odds are they won't make it all the way through. But tonight? They're playing the as-of-now undefeated Patriots, the favored team to go all the way.

Tonight, this is their Superbowl. And they're playing with hearts and smarts, and sheer determination.

And going into halftime with a hard-won lead.

No matter the final score, they're making the Pats sweat. Go, J'nts!

ETA: I may be getting too old for this shit. I knew that scoreless series would come back to haunt us. Still a good game, mostly well-played, and while I personally would have preferred a different ending, at least it was the Pats, and not, say Dallas or Philly... *spits*

Congrats, New England Patriots.
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
A teaser/excerpts up at the the cosa nostradamus, for them as might be interested. It's the scene the artist used to create the cover, but shouldn't be spoilery.

And, for those of us who were cranky about missing the Giants/Pats game, the Universe is giving us a New Year's Eve present...

Patriots-Giants Game Now on NBC and CBS
By RICHARD SANDOMIR
The Patriots-Giants game, which was to be broadcast Saturday night to less than half the country by the NFL Network, will be available to the entire nation under an agreement reached Wednesday by NBC and CBS to simulcast it...

Until Wednesday’s deal, the Patriots-Giants game would have been available to the NFL Network’s 43 million satellite and cable subscribers. Another 10.8 million TV households in the New York-New Jersey and Boston-Manchester, N.H., markets were to get it free on local broadcast stations because they live within the teams’ designated home markets."
rest of the article is here

As a Giants fan, and a football fan in general, who lives smack dab in the middle of those two "designated home markets" I'm thrilled with this. And not just because it sticks it to the cable companies. Although that has a lot to do with it, yeah....

Now I have to decide if I want the Giants to win (yea!) or if I want to see history in the making and the Pats go undefeated...
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
I did not, alas, proof my author set for FREE FALL today. Instead, I went to see "Enchanted," which I have been looking forward to since I saw the early previews months ago. A totally sweet movie, and I say that, for once, without any sarcasm whatsoever. I had expected more sophisticated humor, considering it's set in NYC, but no, this is just...sweet. Lovely, even. And sweetly funny. It's the story of a Disney princess (literally) sent by the evil stepmother-Queen to a land where "there are no happy endings" (aka Manhattan). But of course, everyone (except the evil stepmother) has a happy ever after. And along the way you can feel your heart grow several sizes larger. Call this the anti-Grinch movie, and go see it, if only to count the number of movies (from "Beauty and the Beast" to "King Kong") this movie makes gentle love to. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the actress playing the young daughter, but she was adorable so we'll cut her some slack.

What amused me most of all, however, was where and why my suspension of disbelief failed. spoilers under the cut )

Came home and had a lovely dinner, plotting elements of Project Whoosh! with C. And, after scaring the crap out of their loyal fans, the Giants clinch a wildcard spot in the playoffs. Yay! [it's not like we have a shot at the Superbowl, but at least they won't be playing golf too damn early...]

And now I am going to continue the theme of total non-work, and go to bed early. Wow.
