I now wish I'd been watching the debate. Just so I could have reached through the screen and beaten McCain into sense with my WTF mallet.

Transcript from last night, on the question of a woman's right to choose:

OBAMA: We can find some common ground, because nobody's pro-abortion. I think it's always a tragic situation. We should try to reduce these circumstances.

McCAIN: Just again, the example of the eloquence of Sen. Obama. He's [finger quote]"health for the mother."[/fingerquote] You know, that's been stretched by the pro-abortion movement in America to mean almost anything. That's the extreme pro-abortion position, quote, "health."

This... such total and absolute disregard for the very real question of a woman's health and rights is... jaw-dropping. "Extreme pro-abortion position?" WTF is that? You mean anyone who thinks that no woman should be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term, with all the emotional, physical and, yes, financial demands bearing and raising a child puts on the mother?

Nobody is pro-abortion. Nobody.

Many of us are pro-birth control, pro- responsible sex-ed, and pro-choice-to-reproduce. And pro-Obama.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The head of the federal agency responsible for providing women with access to contraceptives and pregnancy counseling resigned unexpectedly Thursday after Medicaid officials took action against him in Massachusetts.

The Health and Human Services Department provided no details about the nature of the Massachusetts action that led to Dr. Eric Keroack's resignation.

Just five months ago, Keroack was chosen by President Bush to oversee HHS' Office of Population Affairs and its $283 million annual budget. The pick angered Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion rights groups that viewed him as opposed to birth control and comprehensive sex education. Keroack had worked for an organization that opposes contraception.

''Yesterday, Dr. Eric Keroack alerted us to an action taken against him by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Office of Medicaid. As a result of this action I accepted his resignation,'' Dr. John Agwunobi, assistant secretary for health, said in a terse statement Thursday evening.

Massachusetts Medicaid officials did not return phone calls seeking comment.

In Reversal, Wal-Mart Will Sell Contraceptive
By MICHAEL BARBARO
Published: March 4, 2006

Relenting to pressure from state government officials, Wal-Mart Stores said yesterday that it would begin carrying Plan B, an emergency contraception pill, in all of its United States pharmacies by the end of the month.

But in a move that rankled some women's groups, Wal-Mart said that it would allow pharmacists who object to filling a Plan B prescription to refer customers to another pharmacist and, in some cases, to another pharmacy....

Ron Chomiuk, vice president for Wal-Mart's pharmacy business, said in a statement yesterday that given the impending state action and the fact that Plan B was approved by the Food and Drug Administration, "we feel it is difficult to justify" not selling the drug.

A PSA if you live in one of the affected states...

"In Ohio, women may lose direct access to their ob/gyns, coverage for infertility treatment, and coverage for cervical cancer screenings.

In New Hampshire, women may lose coverage for contraceptives, direct access to their ob/gyns, and coverage for maternity care.

In Tennessee, women may lose coverage for osteoporosis screenings and direct access to their ob/gyns.

Most sexually active women aged 15-44 have used birth control. But who's paying for it? If Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY) has his
way, insurance companies in almost every state won't have to. Next week, the Senate will consider a bill introduced by Sen.
Enzi that would allow insurance companies to ignore state laws that protect patients, including laws that prohibit insurance
companies from covering some prescription drugs, but not birth control.

Urge your senator to vote against S. 1955.
http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/enzi_bill

For years many insurance plans covered prescription drugs, but refused to cover birth control pills and other prescription
contraceptives for women. Planned Parenthood spent nearly a decade convincing lawmakers in 23 states to remedy this inequity.
Sen. Enzi's bill threatens to reverse this progress by overriding state laws that protect patients, including laws that
require coverage for prescription contraceptives, cervical cancer screenings, maternity care, mental health treatment, and
dozen of other benefits guaranteed under state law.

Speak out now. If you live in an affected state, urge your senator to vote No on S. 1955.

Thank you,

Cecile Richards
President
Planned Parenthood Federation of America"

They're claiming their pharmacists are allowed to discriminate... but only regarding this one (Plan B) medication, and only on this one basis. If they're going to claim protection under civil rights statutes, don't they have to accept all the worms that come with that particular can?

Shouldn't then an employee be allowed to refuse a customer condoms, because wasting seed is against their religious teachings? Basic birth control, even if issued for reasons other than purposes sexual (hormone pills are used for a variety of treatments, not just prevention of procreation). What about AIDS medications? If you believe that it's a punishment from God for sinful ways, you should be allowed to tell them to go somewhere else for their meds, no?

As I said. Can open. Worms everywhere. Me doing all my shopping elsewhere.

I still have the legally-granted right and ability to discriminate against small-minded bigots.
