I'm Doomed

No sooner do I post the cover for FLESH & FIRE than the page proofs appear. Due back on the 11th, which isn't too bad, but still Ain't Good.

I am now working on four, count 'em FOUR projects -- PACK OF LIES in draft revision, MUSTANG in first writing push, VINEART 2 in outline expansion, and FLESH & FIRE in page proof. And, oh, a short story-with-deadline, and a freelance project due on the 30th, too.

It's a good thing I love my job.

So I will merely remind you that this week's two-for-one contest is still going on, and disappear in a poof of deadlines....

I don't hate the human race as a whole. Often I think it has immense potential to actually do something worthwhile someday.

I do, however, hate an awful lot of individuals.

The state police and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took over the farm of the prominent New York thoroughbred breeder and owner Ernie Paragallo on Wednesday, saying he had neglected more than 170 horses under his care.

Multiple charges of animal cruelty are pending against Paragallo in Greene County; each count carries a punishment of up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

The rest of the article will break your heart. This isn't some fly-by-night operation, or a household unable to care for a horse or two -- this is a Big Name, a going corporation, and a hundred and seventy animals, including twenty-five mares in foal. I know times are tough, grain costs are high, and racing is a business. But I don't give a damn if an animal is going to be raced, petted, or eaten -- they deserve humane treatment.

Or maybe we should come up with a better term, since "human" doesn't seem to go into "humane" quite the way it should.

Oh my god, and also, ew!

Bosses at animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are sweating over a new idea to turn George Clooney's perspiration into a tofu flavor.

Proof once again that the good folk at PETA are (forgive me) OUT OF THEIR FREAKING MINDS.

Tell me their April Fool's got released a little early? Please? Oh, please?

When the first three things that happen to you in the morning are:

1. spill coffee grindings
2. spill coffee
3. get hugged by cat who can tell you're annoyed -- who then knocks something off the desk

that gives you an indication of what the day's going to be like.

Plan for the day:

1. make to-do list
2. kill to-do list, one item at a time
3. go back to bed when list is dead.
lauraanne_gilman: (stop that)
A coal ash spill that blanketed residential neighborhoods and contaminated nearby rivers in Roane County, Tenn., earlier this week is more than three times larger than initially estimated, the Tennessee Valley Authority said on Thursday. (emphasis mine)

Coal ash, a byproduct of burning coal, contains toxic heavy metals like arsenic, lead and selenium that can cause cancer and neurological problems.

Is the election over yet?

How about now?

Now?
