When I spend All Day at the Office & then come home late, the housecats are Seriously Affectionate, each in their own way.... For Boomer, that involves trying to eat my hair and head-butting.  Oaf.  But it makes me wonder why cats and horses seem to think eating hair (not grooming, EATING) is a sign of affection.  Should I be switching shampoo?

After several days among people, and a convention looming, and more interaction on the month's horizon,  I am starting to develop that Introvert's Twitch, the one that says "I like you a lot but please stand over there and don't talk to me?"  There are several friends who have perfected that art: alas, most of them are Not in NYC.

Due to scheduling issues (not mine) I'm juggling four different major projects this week.  Two is optimal, three is manageable, four makes me cranky.  The smaller projects are huddled in the corner, waiting their turn.  Apologies to anyone waiting on one of those smaller/non-time-sensitive things...

My brain is utterly in mystery mode right now, not fantasy. Good, because I'm writing a mystery. Bad, because I'm also revising a fantasy.

Writing mysteries is actually both weirder and calmer for me: there's less fannish connection, less chatter in my daily life, so I'm not distracted from the Story by the Community. This is partially because I was a reader rather than a Fan of mysteries and so not hooked into that community the same way, and partially because there seems to be less online "noise"  for mysteries the way there is F/SF.  Pluses and minuses to both.

and now I have to go away and juggle some more.  Feel free to use this thread to ask me anything.  I reserve the right not to answer (or to lie like a rug if provoked/inspired) but I'll try to get to all questions...
lauraanne_gilman: (bye-bye)
I am off in a bit for PlagueCon (aka Passover, where the panels are never-ending but the Green Room puts out a hell of a spread). Consider this your Open Thread -- say anything, ask anything... just keep it Addams-Family Friendly, please!

Remember to put in your entries for the "Plausibility" contest, and stop by tomorrow to enter the "Midnight Cravings" contest for a chance to win a copy of the new Nocturne novella anthology of the same name, plus a copy of The Night Serpent -- and chocolate!

I am exhausted and my brain is refusing to function, despite having a full day ahead. I am also hearing the distant sound of deadline drums even in my sleep, which is a Bad Sign.

Make your own content here. I'll be back to grade your submissions later.

Started this morning frustrated over things totally out of my control, and Boomer jumped into my lap, headbutted me, and leaned against my chest, purring like a large, furry performance vehicle.

Friends and family are all well and fine, but nobody ever really loves you like a fur-companion.

Meanwhile, as I force myself back to work, I note that we have a bunch of new people who snuck in while I was distracted. Hello, New People! Kitchen's open 24/7, the bar's thataway, the jacuzzi's out back, and mind the alligators, the boys sometimes forget to feed them. Feel free to step up and introduce yourselves.

And in honor of New People, and because I haven't done it in a while, today's an Open Thread Day. Ask anything you'd like, on any topic -- but keep it to PG-13, please!

This thread is now open for comments, questions, yowls and whimpers. Keep it polite, and don't throw accusations you can't support. And if you're not a financial advisor, please state so before offering financial advice.

The apartment is clean, the bags are packed, and at 6,750 words, "Mad Cats and Englishmen" is Fixed. It may even be Dun.

Which is good, 'cause "Cold Iron Cross" is starting to seriously demand my short attention span brain. My weekend visitor jump-started something, as usual, and it's starting to all come together.....

Otherwise, I got nothin'. I'm gone for the weekend. Here, have an open thread. Ask anything you like. Don't leave bloodstains.
lauraanne_gilman: (meerkat and diet coke)
Just to make sure -- everyone has heard that the government says it's okay to not open your e-mail (I guess because it's not a Federal concern?) and therefore have no responsibility for whatever's conveyed therein? So if you're getting, oh, dunning notices from the IRS electronically? No worries, mate! If you don't open them, never happened! Not your problem!

Anyway. I am in Tennessee. I have eaten catfish, gone antiquing (and resisted, damn it, the art nouveau mirror), been molested by a large fuzzy cat and a small enthusiastic puppy, and not yet said "Ah tell you whut" but the accent is definitely starting to slip in. There may be writing tonight. Or we may just bitch talk a lot about writing. Tomorrow, we have to work for a living.

While I'm gone, talk amongst yourselves -- Open Thread is declared!

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] girasole and [livejournal.com profile] jaylake!

Writing annoyance of the day: the perfect response for a character would be to say "Do I look like a Wiki?" Except she's Talent, and so doesn't live on-line, and so wouldn't say that at all. Drat.

Meanwhile, a thought for all you aspiring and pre-published writers to contemplate: Once you are published, many of your dearest friends will buy and read your first work. And then never buy or read anything else of yours ever again. Not because they hated it-- they just won't get around to it. Get used to it, get over it. At least publicly.

I've been up since 5am. Not intentionally, no. On the plus side, I'm almost through my office-averaged 3 solid hours of work. Yay?

And now, for the weekend, I declare an Open Thread. Ask away on whatever topic flits through your brain. I will answer best I can. If I don't know the answer, I will make something up.

First, welcome newcomers! I refer you back a few posts to the "Ask me Anything" Open Thread still ongoing.

Me, I spent yesterday being Social. Social is fun. Social is also exhausting. (Extrovert? Me? Not.) Came home and collapsed.

The next two days are being spent denned up and working. Revisions to chew on, paperwork to handle, a new project to outline. Which means I'll either be vewy vewy quiet, or spamming LJ every hour or so. Only time will tell...

stealing from [livejournal.com profile] kradical:

Since we've gotten a few new people in recently, let's have a semi-directed Open Thread post. Ask a question of me. Any question you want. About writing, about editing, about football, co-ops, felines.... about anything you want.

I reserve the right to not answer a question because it's my LJ and I do have some tiny smidge of discretion, but then again, I'm also occasionally completely without filter.

So onward and on with it! Ask!
lauraanne_gilman: (meerkat meh)
Although I do have a nasty cough and, apparently, a bit of insomnia to go with it. *sigh*

I also am in the middle of about 9000 things that have to get done NOW or YESTERDAY, so may be least in sight for a few days.

Shall I declare an open thread and let you redecorate the place? I think I shall.

Anyone got a question, a comment, a rant, a kvell? Share, do!
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
Crazy-busy today and tomorrow and possibly all weekend. I hereby declare an Open Thread. Chat away! Amuse me! Confuse me! Astonish and amaze me!

-----------------------------

The news last night was reporting, among other things, video footage of a guy who went into a convenience store and, bypassing the cash register, went for...the candy aisle.

They estimate he got away with almost $300 of candy and chips.

Dudes, that is the best example of pot use leading to crime that I have ever seen. Seriously.

And while I'm being shallow... has anyone else in the NYC area seen the "set for life" lottery commercials? And has anyone else wondered why this guys who've just won $100,000 a year for the rest of their lives... are sitting there eating in a fast food restaurant? Cause I'd be at Daniel, or Alain Ducasse. Just sayin'.

There is an emergency Fire Evac listing at http://www.conrunner.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page for folk in fandom. Anyone know of any others?

If you're in the SoCal area, or have news of someone who is safe-in-situ or safe-after-evac, let us know! (feel free to post here, as well. I'd appreciate it!)

Stay safe! And pray for low winds and gentle rains...

EtA: from a friend closer to the action: "daily kos diarists are hosting a series of live blogs to keep local folks and the wider blogosphere informed about what is happening real-time, piecing together news sources, reports from people who are or have evacuated, road conditions and google map routes - google is updating evacuation routes on the fly, may the good Gods bless them, and there's thousands at Qualcomm stadium - where the San Diego Chargers play."

There is apparently a great need for supply donations, not only for evacuees but the animals who are being moved as well. Cats, dogs, horses...
lauraanne_gilman: (brain. hurts.)
Note to self: saying "I need to eat something that isn't coffee" around 1pm, when you've been up since 6am, is a warning sign. I repeat: A WARNING SIGN.

Second warning sign: the only thing not-coffee in the house is salad and a half-empty jar of peanut butter. Added a grocery store run to the to-do list today, so now at least there's red meat in the freezer, and pasta on the shelves.

Have written 3100 words today, progressed further in moving the office of Occasional Employment to the new locale, and been through a writers' group meeting. Feel like an old rag, well-wrung.

I also feel like I should be saying something witty, or insightful, or at very least useful in this space, but everything I know is such obviousness to me, I can't imagine why anyone would be interested. So tell me what it is you want from my brain. Open thread time!

And of possible interest to, well, me: ESPN has acquired both Cricinfo.com and Scrum.net. Oy. Must...resist...timesinks... (it's not that I love either sport madly; I just can't stand there being things out there that I haven't -- given the chance -- at least poked around in a little. No such thing as too broad a knowlege base)

/random sundriness.

(a reminder: we're tracking sightings here)

In honor of the day, and because my brain is busy elsewhere, I'm declaring this an Open Thread. Ask away. I am here but to entertain, eddicate, and eradicate...oh no, wait, that's what the Daleks are for, never mind...

*goes in search of more cafFiend*

(There may also be a political post coming, if I can find the time -- despite the three day weekend, the stupidity, crassness and arrogance of our elected and wanna-be-elected officials never ceases...)

Work done and sent off to various editors, check and YAY!
Apartment cleaned and cats prepped for cat sitter, as much as possible, check.
Luggage packed, including all electronics, adapters, medications and miscellany, check.
Cab called, check.

All right, I'm outa here in a bit. If anyone feels the need to keep up with the trip, my sister has already started blogging their side of things at Destination Anywhere. Otherwise, consider this your open thread for the duration....
lauraanne_gilman: (Default)
Yep, exactly what it sounds like. One of the few thing I dislike about LJ (and blogs in general) is the fact that you have to wait for me to post something before you can sound off.

So, here's your very own thread to play with as you will, if you will. Got a question, a comment, a rant, a suggestion? Have at it! If this goes well, it will become a weekly event -- it's all up to you! (but, yanno, no pressure) Nothing's off-topic because there ain't no topic! Just remember to check the comments to see what folk are saying... (if something becomes particularly hot or interesting, I may take the liberty of giving it its own post).
