The first "Sylvan Investigations" novella, that is.

This is the first of the Kickstarted novellas, following after DRAGON JUSTICE, spinning off half-faun PI Danny Hendrickson into his own series.

Sylvan Investigations_MilesToGo_final

We sent the file off to backers last week, and I've...well, been a little on edge, ever since.  I got one "I loved it!" from someone I saw at Lunacon (bless her, I may have made her repeat it *g*), and the rest has been...silence.

Probably, that's because they haven't had a chance to read it yet.  Or they're not the sort to gush.  Or...they hated it.  Ack.

*does NOT hide under the bed, damn it*

EtA: I'm not asking for reassurances.  Okay, maybe I am.  But it's okay.  ;-)

I'm really hoping they like it.  I'm really hoping they're looking forward to the next installment (PROMISES TO KEEP, currently in production).  I'm really hoping they like them both enough that I get to write the 3rd novella, which in my head is called SOME MISTAKE...

Whatever happens, though, this was - and is - one of the more enjoyable Publishing Aventures I've had, working with my very own publishing team of stalwart freelancers and lunatics.  The fact that none of them throttled me may be a small miracle.  :-)

(and yes, the novellas will be available to the open market this winter, so if you missed the Kickstarter, you'll get a second chance)

Because some of you may've gotten shiny new e-readers recently, and some of you may've missed my flailing when these were first released, and because hey, if I'm not going to tell you about my books, I'm falling down on part of the job, right?

Dragon Virus

$4.99 at BookView Cafe Amazon B&N

“Laura Anne Gilman makes you care. You care about her characters and their choices; you care about what’s happening to their world.”
—Walter Jon Williams

It began soon after the Millennium. Reports of newborns with strange malformations, too weak to live…caused by a single genetic mutation. Or, as the press quickly dubbed it, the Dragon Virus. Scientists predicted that it was an evolutionary dead end; that the mutation would burn itself out quickly; that it was nothing to be worried about.

They were wrong.

Everything was about to change.

Six connected stories, charting the end – beginning – of everything we know, everything we fear, everything we hope for….

With an Introduction by Walter Jon Williams

From Whence You Came: A Lands Vin Novella

Centuries before the Vineart War, massive sea-serpents roamed the seas, endangering the lives of all who sailed there. Only the greatest magic could keep them in check, and protect the coastlines from their depredations. And then…they disappeared. Legend credited Master Vineart Bradhai, and called him a hero.

Legend…. is not always accurate. And often, the truth is a better story.

Set in the world of the Nebula Award-nominated Vineart War trilogy

EtA: nope, cross-posting not working.  hrmmmmm

with a reminder that my SFnal project, DRAGON VIRUS, is now available as an ebook from BookView Cafe, Amazon, and B&N....

Every racial type. Almost every continent. No known cause. Human-created, maybe. Or just God, throwing the dice. Infecting us, warping us. Tied into our genetic code, from here on in. No known treatment. No idea where even to begin.

Everything was about to change.

Six connected stories, charting the end – beginning – of everything we know, everything we fear, everything we hope for….

Praise for Dragon Virus

“Stunningly successful…A potent ride through a changing future, exploring themes and ideas that resonate as much in the modern day as in her darkly evolving future.”   —SF Signal

“A gripping adventure from start to finish, Dragon Virus is highly recommended.”   —Midwest Book Review

The header was going to be "I got nothin'" because the day stretches ahead of me like a busy but dull-to-report writing thing, and I'm all out of foodie neep (and, in fact, may not eat at all today)

However, I was reminded that I do indeed have something to report!

Because "Inferno," the PB back-history short story, has gone live at Bookview Cafe.

It is part, before anyone asks, of a series of "back history" stories I'm writing about a number of the secondary and supporting characters, that will only be available via BookView Cafe (until some publisher offers me wads of cash for a print collection, anyway, she said, being brutally honest. At which point it will cost you more to read, so get 'em now while they're exclusive!)

For your .99 cents, you will also get an excerpt that was only ever before available to eHarlequin readers -- a short excerpt from the book Sergei has been threatening to write about the Care and Feeding of Talent (as referenced in STAYING DEAD and, I think, BRING IT ON.)

EtA: and, because my brain's not back on-line entirely yet: picspam! )

EtA #2: is it cheating to put something you already did this morning on your daily to-do list?
lauraanne_gilman: (bigger boat)
Because the moment a freelancer clears her schedule of one thing, something else should appear to keep her crazed, I've just agreed to write an "e-Bites" for Harlequin Nocturne e-Books. Basically, a novelette-length paranormal dark erotica.

*pauses while [livejournal.com profile] msdori has moment of squeee.*

It took a while because I held by my refusal to write about amorous vampires, werewolves, werecats, or anything else that triggers my "oh god not another" reaction. So what am I writing about?

Heh. Heh heh heh.

You'llllll seeeeee.....

Of course, they want to publish it in August (yes, this August, yay for e-production schedules) so I need to get started. I also need to start on Bonnie #1, which is due in August. While I'm still (because it won't leave me alone) writing forward on TPEMB. And working on a client manuscript or two, because Publishing Grinds Slow and Accounts Payable even slower.

This is why being organized is the #2 secret of freelancing. Oy.
