lauraanne_gilman: (brain. hurts.)
[personal profile] lauraanne_gilman
Four days down, one and a half to go, and then I'll be wending my way homeward. Trip's going quite well so far, and am pleased, but severely sleep-deprived. This late-night partying would be fine if only my body would stop waking me up at 6am Eastern time to do some work...

Updates/reportage when I actually have consistent connectivity again. Until then...

1. What does your first name mean?

Laura = Laurel, and by association honor, fame, lively spirit.
Anne = Gracious one, or favored grace. English form of Hannah

2. What does your middle name mean?

n/a

3. What does your last name mean?

Not a damn thing, really. It was gifted to us, we suspect, by the folk at Ellis Island who couldn't pronounce the original, as we're not related to 98% of all the other Gilmans in the U.S. Other branches of the family include the Bicks, the Shapiros, and the Kornetskys. Of all three, only Kornetsky actually means anything specific: from the town of Kornetsk, which, for the record, no longer exists. "Gilman" however is the name of my dad, and his mother, who was one of my earliest and strongest role models, so it has intense emotional importance to me.

4. So what does your name mean when put together?

Honor or fame of the gracious spirit, whose last name is merely a placeholder.

My Hebrew name, BTW, is Aviva, which means Springtime. Ironic, since I'm a late summer baby. Our rabbi used to joke that it wasn't springtime-the-season, but springtime-can't-stop-her-moving, which is probably more accurate.

5. What would you have been named if you were the opposite gender?

Richard. Or so I'm told.

6. Any other name oddities?

I dumped my middle name long ago -- too much name is just too much. Also, see below.

7. Do you like your name?

Yeah, I do. I admit to adding the 'e' to Ann when I was a wee thing, because I told my parents (and they agreed) that "Ann" looked unfnished without the e. I now get cranky when people leave it off.

8. What do you like best about it?

It looks good on a by-line. Seriously.

9. What do you like least about it?

People trying to shorten it. Only my family gets to call me "Laura" without setting my teeth on edge. Also, people sometimes try to call me "Laurie." Or "Laura Annie." Ugh. See above re: teeth on edge.

10. If you had to change your name (witness protection program, whatever), what would you want it to be?

Suri. Hey, I had it before Wee Cruse, damn it! *grin* Although I've always loved the name "Emma" as well. Last name? Hey, if you're going into the WPP, you might as well embrace it fully and become a Smith or Jones. So, Emma Smith.
