Every Saturday, we do a tasting of four wines, usually along a theme. And almost every Saturday, I'm the one who gets stuck behind the counter, because, apparently, I'm Damn Good at talking to people about wine. Or, as one customer said this afternoon, "that's so cool. You not only give me good wines, you give me cool knowing stuff about the wines, too."
But I was about to go on break, and I said to co-worker, "My usuals* haven't shown up! If I leave, they'll show up."
And sure enough, as I was grabbing my coat, I ran into them: a couple, borderline SCA/post-hippie types, who come in every week and buy a bottle of wine from the tasting to go with their dinner that night. So I put my coat down and went back to the tastig table, because, sure, someone else could pour the wines for them, but they're my people, damn it.
After they left, new bottle of wine in hand, my co-worker turned to me and said "you didn't tell them you're leaving."
me: "No, I didn't."
Co-worker: "they're gonna cry."
So, I think, am I.
* I have a number of Usuals, but these guys are just adorable, and I hate to miss them
