lauraanne_gilman: (my job)
It seems to work for other people, so in the hopes of lighting a fire under my posterior, herewith the opening lines of everything (short story-wise) that needs to be finished, damn it, in May. Or June.

Untitled Story #1

The Rapture occurred at 5:58 am. I was not driving my car. I was not unmaned.

One-eyed Trouble

"I was thinking it’s maybe time we had a change of scenery."

untitled Story #2

The wind was sneaky, waiting around the corner to pounce on you.

They Come Back in Spring

"Once, we were nomads."

Wolfling

"Tough break."

A World of Unfortunate Place Names

There were no safe places in Portside.

and a bit from a story that died, that I really need to find a home for otherwise:

"David's the talent, I'm the handler.'
"Takes talent to handle me right."
I ignored him. "He's also my husband. It was the only way to seal the deal. My mother warned me not to get involved with witches."
"Your mother would know. Oh, wait, that was a w, not a b. And the correct term, as you well know, is 'etheric interpreter." Witch is just so…warty."

My mom's college reunion is coming up next month. I was finally able to recover from storage her old yearbook, in time for her to bring it along.

I also found both my parents' yearbooks from high school.

The temptation to scan some photos in is almost overwhelming....

(my mother was a gamine sprite [think Audrey Hepburn in 'Sabrina'], and they said of her 'Janet's aim is to write great fiction; For which she'll get a Pulitzer prize.' No Pulitzer, but she does write, and she has won notable prizes! My dad was intense and adorable, and his "about" reads "one of the select few that can combine girls and studies and get away with it." Heh. Honor roll...and traffic squad! My dad was a geek!)

[heee, and he was smirking in his business school photo. That's my dad...]
