foodie glee
Dec. 14th, 2003 05:44 pmSaturday night at Philcon has become a tradition (IOW, we've done it twice in a row), that a group of us go off-site for a Really Nice Dinner. This year we went to Alma de Cuba. Fusion Cuban, not inexpensive but worth every penny. The restaurant is funky-lovely, the service was well-timed and unobtrusive, and the food.. .the food was bliss.
Started with a mojito classico (ymmmers), which is an evil drink not taken in moderation. I was moderate. My appetizer was the smoked tuna empanada, which was served on a thin bed of raw minced tuna. Deeeelish. And (proving true friendship) I got to try someone's foie gras and fig empanada, which was... really, the only word I could come up with to describe it was sexual. In the "ooooo.. yeaaahhhhh" contented smile way.
Ahem. Anyway. Main course was lechon asado, a shank of pork roasted rustic-style. Very heavy, very rich, very very wonderful. With the skin and fat intact. Who needs wimpy arteries, anyway?
(I actually could only eat some of the chittlings, and none of the fat. But oh, such an evilly wonderful mouthfeel!)
For dessert I stuck with espresso (The taste buds said "yes" but the body cried "no mas! No mas!") but once again friendship came though and I got to try some lovely sorbets, and a marvelous spiced chocolate ice cream. Imagine the most perfect gingerbread in the world, flavored with high quality cocoa, and served meltingly cold.
And then we rolled on back to the hotel, replete and humming with well-fed happiness.
If you're in Philly ever, try it! (it's on Walnut Street, about eight blocks from the Reading Station Market.) And make sure you take a look at the bar; it is, well, neat.
