"Two former managers of hedge funds at Bear Stearns were arrested this
morning at their homes and were expected to appear in court later in
the day to be indicted on charges related to the funds' collapse,
according to reports.
Ralph Cioffi was arrested at his house in Tenafly, N.J., and Matthew
Tannin at his Manhattan apartment, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau
of Investigation told Bloomberg News. They are to appear in federal
district court in Brooklyn.
The two men are at the center of an investigation into whether they
deceived investors and the public about the health of the two Bear
Stearns funds.
The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that
authorities are expected to cite an e-mail from Mr. Tannin to Mr.
Cioffi, suggesting that the market for their funds' investments was
"toast" -- four days before they assured investors everything was fine."(emphasis mine)
